Fiber is one of those ‘things’ that every health professional and dietician will tell you to add to your diet. Often times, you and people like you have no idea why fiber is so important.

It may be hard to imagine digestive benefits. Pooping more often doesn’t exactly sound like the glamorous result a super-food should yield. However, there is an immense benefit in regulating your bowels.

Fiber is found in many foods that you may already know and love. Food such as whole-grain breads/pastas, brown rice, berries, and even lentils contain fiber! Allowing yourself a diet rich in fiber not only keeps your plate looking yummy, but your body will thank you in oh-so-many ways.

Benefits of a fiber-rich diet include:

  • A lower risk of heart disease. Fiber reduces ‘bad’ cholesterol levels and maintains/ reduces blood pressure1.
  • Healthy digestion. By now, we all know that digestion occurs through a system of bodily functions. Diets with little fiber will clog up or stress that system. Fiber regulates digestion in such a way that allows for your body to carry out the digestive function properly to reduce stress or block-up.
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes. If you already have diabetes, soluble fiber can help reduce the rate of sugar absorption and improve your blood sugar levels2.
  • Reduces the risk of cancer. While not conclusive, studies have shown a beneficial impact on reducing the risk of mouth, stomach and colon cancer through the consumption of fiber3.
